How do we measure success? Success to most people is achieving a desired outcome placed on a specified goal. But what happens when we fall short of that specified goal? Some of us will immediately move from a place of being hopeful, excited and motivated to being discouraged, negative and refocusing our attention someplace else. Refocusing our attention someplace else, in most cases, just repeats the cycle of failure. Failures are life greatest lessons but that doesn’t mean we always get the lessons, sometimes it takes many failures for us to understand why they keep happening. But hidden within failures are little successes but to see them you have to reevaluate, see the big picture and pay attention to the details.
We all want the things we desire to happen when and how we think they should happen. Doing something that you would not normally do makes it successful regardless of the outcome. In doing something that you would not normally do, you learn about yourself and what you are made of. Ultimately, we get to choose how we react to anything at anytime. Sometimes when we accomplish something no matter how small it is, it is still an accomplishment and it’s better to live in that moment for at least a moment.
I recently did a kickstarter campaign and even though my outcome was not achieved, I still felt a sense of accomplishment because I was able to do something that I was not able to do it the past. In the past, I made certain tasks bigger in my head than it had to be thereby not even trying. Does this sound familiar? So even if you try something for the first time and you don’t achieve your goal, you realized it’s not as big of a deal as you once thought. Along this journey to completing my feature film project “Love Therapy,” I made some cool connections along the way, I grew as a human being and as an artist. This campaign also promoted the movie, therefore more people are now aware of the project; another little success which will eventually help me achieve my desired outcome.
There are times in life when we face that fork in the road, two different paths, two choices, two different outcomes. One path is the path you have always traveled, the other path is a chance for new possibilities/outcomes and there will be challenges on both paths. Traveling down a familiar road is comforting and we know what to expect, so most us may choose to stay on the same path. But, sometimes we realize we have nothing to lose by trying the new path but maybe everything to gain; and such is the case with me with doing my first kickstarter campaign.
Sometimes, we just need to take a step back to see a clearer picture whenever we have goals that we want to achieve. Stepping back may mean taking a hard look at our choices that we have made thus far. For me, this journey has taught me a lot about the choices that lead me to the place were I currently reside. Although my journey with “Love Therapy” is only half completed, I look forward to learning, growing and giving more. For me making movies is about giving, giving something unique and interesting to the world that I hope will inspire, inform and entertain. A Successful path is most often obtained through stepping outside of your comfort zone into rough waters; because inside of those waters lie the answers you seek inside yourself. Being in rough waters makes you vulnerable but because of that, you may realize what has been holding you back. Good luck while traveling down your desired path and remember not to focus on making a living instead focus on creating a life.
